The Future Is Now for the Indianapolis Colts and Other AFC South Must-Reads

So much for rebuilding.

Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star [1] bangs out the article of day in which he says the Colts are much further along than anyone would have thought.

The irony of these Colts is that when you break down the component parts, there’s not much to see. The defense is right where everyone expected it to be, even a little worse.

The offensive weapons are just as suspect as previously thought.

There are just three areas the Colts are visibly better than analysts like me expected.

Reggie Wayne is leading the NFL in receiving. Raise your hand if you saw that coming.

Andrew Luck isn’t just “rookie good.” He’s verging on “actually good.”

Finally, this team has been galvanized by the tragedy surrounding their head coach. They play hard every play, spending themselves on behalf of their mentor.

I always expected the Colts to rebuild quickly. Any rebuilding project that takes more than two years in the NFL is one that wasn’t well executed. This was never going to be a slow process.

It’s now clear, however, that the Colts’ “reloaded” at a fortuitous time in the life cycle of the AFC. There are enough “down” teams that the Colts didn’t have to improve dramatically to find themselves in games, and ultimately, the playoff hunt.
