Should Indianapolis Colts Regret Taking Andrew Luck over RG3?

Robert Griffin III has taken the NFL [1] by storm, throwing away common rookie conventions and emerging as one of the most dynamic players in the league.

And that’s after only seven games.

RG3 has the blend of athleticism, speed, passing ability and intelligence that GMs salivate over, and after his early career successes, one question is inevitable:

Should the Indianapolis Colts [2] regret taking Andrew Luck [3] over RG3 in April’s draft?

Luck has not exactly slumped since entering the NFL. He has helped the Colts to a 3-3 record, including a Week 4 win over the Green Bay Packers [4] and reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers [5].

Luck has been comfortable in the pocket, delivered accurate throws regardless of distance and made smart decisions usually reserved for QBs at least five years his elder. The Colts knew the player they were drafting and felt he was both the best and safest choice for their franchise moving forward.

Already Luck is proving them right, throwing for 1,488 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. However, he has simply not brought forth the level of excitement that RG3 has.

Yes, Luck is a tremendous QB that is well on his way to becoming one of the most elite in all of football, but he has not been as good as RG3 so far.

The Washington Redskins [6] signal-caller has thrown a mere two interceptions, compared to five touchdown passes and 1,343 yards passing. He also has 379 yards on the ground with six rushing scores.

Would the Colts, a team with relatively no running game, have benefited from adding the dynamic ability of RG3?

It is a fair question, but it also seems extremely short-sighted. Indianapolis may not have a ground game now, but for them to draft a QB to enhance their running game would have been a mistake.

The Colts can draft a RB to complement Luck in the coming years and help continue the development of Luck.

Verdict

While the early returns on RG3 have been higher than any player in recent memory, Luck has still found a way to prove he was the right option for the Colts.

The debate of who was the better draft pick will rage for the entirety of their careers, but Luck was the right decision for Indianapolis and will have a tremendous career to show for it.

Regretting the drafting of one of the most complete prospects in decades is not a feeling that will ever creep up on Colts management.
