Ryan Grigson Has a Unique Opportunity and Other AFC South Must-Reads

Posted By Nate Dunlevy On February 7, 2013 @ 7:18 am In Colts News | No Comments

Chances like the one the Indianapolis Colts [1] have don’t come around often.

Ben Savage of Colts Authority [2] says Ryan Grigson has a unique challenge in free agency. He has a cheap, good quarterback and plenty of cap room to work with.

His on-the-money quote was this, “no other team has had this amount of cap space with a quarterback this talented, at a bargain basement price.”

Savage is right. The new rookie-wage scale has flung open a three-year window for the Colts, Redskins [3], Seahawks [4] and even 49ers [5] to gain a serious financial advantage at the quarterback position.

Without having to invest $10 million a year in the quarterback positions, teams with top-end young talent suddenly have a massive advantage over the rest of the league.

Playing into the Colts’ hand is that they play in the AFC where few of the brightest young quarterbacking stars reside.

The “Luck advantage” is going to last for several seasons. The Colts don’t have many big dollar deals on the books, and one of the few they have is coming off the books next year. Antoine Bethea will be the second-highest paid Colt in 2013, but is in the final year of his contract.

Indy has precious few players who will definitely be on the team in 2014 making over $2 million a year. Luck, Reggie Wayne and Robert Mathis all remain affordable, but beyond those three, Indy may not have any $2 million players beyond what they sign this offseason.

Tom Zbikowski, Cory Redding and Samson Satele are no locks to be with the team in two years, and they represent some of the bigger contracts on the books for the Colts. All three could be cut without any negative cap ramifications should they underperform next season.

That means the flexibility the Colts have in 2013 will likely be around for the foreseeable future.

2012 was a bonus year for Indianapolis fans. Even if the Colts had only won seven games in 2012, there would still be every reason to expect a huge leap forward in 2013.

Cap space, control of a cheap, young star and an organization committed to spending money to win could create a title contender in Indy sooner rather than later.
