Peyton Manning Can’t Hide Anxiousness to Return to Field

Peyton Manning [1] fails at being idle. He doesn’t like it, and it is obvious.

His frustration in the coaches box during a game oozes from his skin. He has recently progressed to watching the action from the sidelines, and his idle unease is nonetheless just as apparent.

He put this frustration on display again this Saturday as he stopped by the CBS broadcast booth during the Tennessee [2]-LSU game.

Check out the video here [3].

Manning commenced in the typical chit-chat, until Verne Lundquist came to the inevitable topic of Manning’s rehab. Said Manning:

“I’m doing well, Verne. I get to do a little more each week. I’m taking it slow, I’m following doctors orders and I’m trying to help out with the team wherever I can.

“It’s tough, Verne. I was telling my minister the other day in our Bible study, it’s kinda like I’ve been giving the sermon for 14 years and now I’m passing out the bulletins. And I’m doing a real good job on giving out these bulletins but it doesn’t have a real big impact on the service.”

Manning’s comments leave little doubt in my mind that he is going to do everything he can to get on the field as soon as he can. This isn’t shocking, but it could present an interesting problem. If Manning isn’t ready to return until Week 14 or so and the Colts [4] have one of the worst records in the league (a very likely scenario), ownership isn’t exactly going to be thrilled to have him take the field.

This would (a) risk injury in a meaningless game and (b) potentially cost the Colts valuable draft spots. I say good luck to the Colts’ owners and coaches keeping this guy off the field.
