NFL Trade Rumors: Why Trading Reggie Wayne Is a Bad Idea for Indianapolis Colts

If the Indianapolis Colts [1] are even thinking about trading all-pro wide receiver Reggie Wayne [2] at this year’s NFL [3] trading deadline, they need to stop and realize what the future consequences of such a move would be.

Wayne is their best receiver, and even if the Colts don’t make the playoffs, which they likely won’t, Peyton Manning [4] will need his No. 1 target next season when he returns from injury.

If the Colts are bad enough to earn the first pick in the 2012 NFL draft, then quarterback Andrew Luck from Stanford, assuming the Colts take him, would need an elite receiver to throw to.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter [5] suggested on ESPN radio this week that the Colts should trade Wayne for a fourth-round pick in the coming draft, which is absolutely absurd. Why would the Colts give up a top 10 receiver for a fourth-round pick? That’s insane.

Wayne is the type of receiver you can depend on, and his seven straight seasons of 1,000 yards receiving or more is a testament to his consistent success.

The Colts should re-sign Wayne to new multi-year contract extension before they trade him. They don’t have any other receiver that defenses fear.

Pierre Garcon is a good player, and so is Austin Collie when healthy, but neither of those two guys makes defensive coordinators stay up all night game planning on how to stop them. Not only is Wayne a deep threat, he can be a possession receiver too. The Colts have no one on their roster who can fill his role if he’s traded.

The Colts would be foolish to trade Wayne or defensive end Robert Mathis this season, because if they do, the team could finish 0-16. They really could, because right now, at 0-5, they are playing terrible, and taking two of your best players out of the mix surely wouldn’t help things.

Reggie Wayne is a top NFL receiver, and trading him does not help the present or future of the Indianapolis Colts organization.
