NFL Power Rankings: Are Indianapolis Colts League’s Worst Team?

While there are three winless teams in the NFL right now, two of them spent Week 5 on the bye. That would seem to make the Indianapolis Colts, the one team that did play (and lose), de facto worst in the league. But, alas, that’s not the case.
The Colts, despite all of their problems and their 0-5 record, have a better chance of improvement than their winless counterparts, the Miami Dolphins and the St. Louis Rams. Of the three teams, it’s the Rams that are the league’s worst, and it’s not even close.
Through the first quarter of the season, the Rams have the worst offense in the NFL and the 31st ranked defense. They’ve scored just 46 points while giving up a total of 113 to their opponents. While Miami and Indianapolis have lost in close contests, the same can’t be said for the woeful Rams.
The Colts at least have an excuse for their poor play—losing starting quarterback Peyton Manning to a neck injury that required surgery and has kept him off the field this season. The Rams have suffered injuries of their own, but none that seemed so likely to doom their chances.
Instead, the St. Louis starters have done nothing but dramatically underwhelm. Quarterback Sam Bradford doesn’t have 1,000 passing yards to his name but nonetheless has been sacked 18 times. The team has just one rushing and three receiving touchdowns on the year, while the defense has allowed 11 scores.
No, the Colts aren’t in a good situation, sitting at 0-5, but they have a chance to improve. Losing so many close games will ultimately give way to wins; they can find a way to score, and they can find a way to stop their opponents.
The same cannot be said about the Rams, who not only are the worst team in the league through five weeks but also have the greatest chance to go winless on the year. They face the Green Bay Packers this Sunday, so the odds of St. Louis turning things around after their bye are extremely slim.
