NFL Playoffs: Peyton Manning Further Proves He’s Most Overrated Quarterback Ever
Posted By Nicholas Goss On January 9, 2011 @ 7:07 pm In Colts News | No Comments
Peyton Manning is so overrated, and every time we think the Indianapolis Colts are dangerous, and say “I hope my team doesn’t play them,” we realize they are both grossly overrated.
Saturday’s loss to the New York Jets put Manning under .500 for his playoff career, dropping to 9-10 in 11 postseason appearances.
The loss was also the seventh time the Colts have lost in their first playoff game. After losing in the Super Bowl to the New Orleans Saints last year, a loss that was made with an interception by Manning, Manning led the Colts to a solid season this year.
The Colts faced a number of injuries to important players this season, making their AFC South division title a nice accomplishment.
But before we applaud their accomplishments and make excuses for them, let’s be real. They were never very good, and their flaws showed in the playoffs, as well as the regular season.
The Colts defense is not very good, and it cannot stop the run. Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis are two of the better pass rushers in the league, but those are the only two players opposing offenses fear.
The AFC South is also a very weak division, with no team that is playoff tested. The Colts should win this division every year.
Back to Peyton Manning, and his career of regular season brilliance. For all the MVP trophies Manning has won, he is a terrible playoff performer. Never have I seen a player be so dominant in the regular season, then play several tiers worse in the playoffs.
Manning plays like the best quarterback ever nearly every season, but as the new year begins, he cannot win games in January.
The comparisons to Tom Brady are now laughable, especially since Brady has won more in the postseason with a far less talented batch of receivers. Randy Moss played with Brady for three season, and was the only true superstar receiver Mr. Clutch has thrown to.
Six of Manning’s ten career playoff losses have been to three different teams: the New England Patriots, San Diego Chargers, and New York Jets.
Manning is unable to learn from past mistakes when he plays an opponent that has beaten him in the postseason before. People claim Manning is so smart, and that he studies film and defenses better than most, yet he makes the same mistakes over and over again, to many of the same teams.
When people say Peyton Manning is the best quarterback ever, I get angry. He’s not even top three. Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Troy Aikman, John Elway and Steve Young are all better, and played just as well in the playoffs as they did in the regular season.
Manning is a great fantasy football player, and will more than likely lead the Colts to at least ten wins every year, and an AFC South division title.
But to be the one of the best players ever at any position, you have to consistently elevate your game in the playoffs, not play worse.
Peyton Manning is a very good player, and a certain Hall of Famer, but he is not one of the best ever.
