Move Over, RG3, Andrew Luck Is Rookie of the Year Favorite Again

The NFL [1]’s Rookie of the Year race took another turn in Week 13 as Andrew Luck [2] thrust himself into the lead.

The Indianapolis Colts [3] rookie had been falling behind Robert Griffin III in recent weeks, but a valiant fourth-quarter comeback against the Detroit Lions [4] again put his resiliency on display and made him a favorite for the honor.

Other rookies, including Luck’s teammate, T.Y. Hilton, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers [5] running back Doug Martin have played great, but the truth is that the ROTY award will go to either Luck or RG3.

RG3 has spent most of the year as the front-runner, and when looking at statistics, he looks like the clear choice.

Through 11 games, RG3 has thrown for 2,497 yards, 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He has also added 100 rushes for 642 yards and six scores.

By comparison, Luck’s numbers falter in the interceptions department. Through 12 games, he has thrown for 3,596 yards, 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Luck has added five rushing scores of his own.

However, while Luck has turned the ball over far too much for his own good, he has made up for it because of his penchant for fourth-quarter comebacks. Luck’s rally against the Lions was his fifth game-winning drive. More importantly, he has taken the hapless Colts from a season ago and turned them into a contender.

Luck is not solely responsible for Indy’s turnaround, but what he has done is nothing short of remarkable. At 8-4, the Colts are in prime playoff positioning and have somehow found a way to seamlessly move on from the Peyton Manning [7] era, a feat considered impossible when the season began.

The race is far from from over. RG3 is still a legitimate candidate and his 5-6 Washington Redskins [9] are still firmly in the NFC playoff hunt, but there are simply so many feel-good storylines in Indianapolis right now.

Luck’s emergence, the resiliency of head coach Chuck Pagano, the team’s playoff contention, Reggie Wayne’s resurgence, etc…

Another fourth-quarter comeback from Luck, and this race may be all but over.
