LaVon Brazill: Updated Fantasy Outlook After Donnie Avery’s Injury

Indianapolis Colts [1] wide receiver Donnie Avery went down with an injury in the team’s Week 11 matchup with the New England Patriots [2], which means big things could be in store for rookie wide receiver LaVon Brazill [3]

According to NFL Network’s Albert Breer via Twitter, Avery went down with a concussion against the Patriots and was unable to return:

Avery was having a monster season thanks to the outstanding success of rookie quarterback Andrew Luck. Entering the game with New England he had caught 28 passes for 519 yards and one touchdown.

That production could now swing Brazill’s way.

Brazill, a rookie receiver out of Ohio University, was selected by the Colts in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL draft with the No. 206 overall pick.

A 5′11″, 190-pound speedster, Brazill was chosen by the Colts to eventually play the slot and contribute on special teams while being groomed for a starting role.

After Avery went down against the Patriots, Brazill took the majority of his snaps and caught two passes for 46 yards. Entering the game he had only caught six passes for 79 yards.

Depending on how long Avery is out with concussion symptoms, Brazill could see more passes thrown his way than ever. With the way Luck has been playing so far, that’s nothing but a good thing for the rookie receiver.

Brazill is still behind several targets on the food chain, even if he is starting. Reggie Wayne, Coby Fleener, Dwayne Allen and others are still more important targets for Luck, but Brazill will see his fair share of passes thrown his way if Luck makes it that far in his progressions.

At best, Brazill is an option you stash on your bench in case he has a breakout game later in the season. He still won’t see enough balls thrown his way with Avery out to justify starting him in any position unless you are in an extremely deep league.

Brazill has a chance to have a bright future down the road, but for now it’s best to take a cautious approach to him in fantasy football. Avery wasn’t a game-breaker in fantasy, and a rookie like Brazill won’t be either.
