Indianapolis Colts Wanted Receiver Josh Gordon in the 2012 Supplemental Draft

The Cleveland Browns [1] selected former Baylor wide receiver Josh Gordon in the second round of the 2012 NFL Supplemental Draft, but it appears the Indianapolis Colts [2] were another team that wanted the wideout.

Adam Caplan, appearing on Indianapolis radio station WFNI revealed the details (h/t stampedeblue [3]):

I can tell you for a fact that the Colts really liked Josh Gordon, who ended up being selected in the second round. It was a little bit too high for the Colts taste, but I think had he been there in the third or fourth, they would have looked to select him.

Keep in mind a selection in the supplemental draft takes away the exact selection in the following year’s real draft.  The Colts’ interest in Gordon and willingness to give up a real draft selection is telling of how the franchise feels about its current wide receiver group.

Reggie Wayne is still a No. 1 receiver, but the veteran receiver is moving past his prime. They selected speedster T.Y. Hilton in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft, and Donnie Avery and Austin Collie still have a chance to contribute, but after that, the depth chart is bleak.

The future does not look good for the receiver position in Indianapolis, hence the interest in Gordon. The 6′3″ 225-pound receiver has the perfect frame, and great speed to boot.

However, Gordon comes with a lot of baggage. He was kicked off the Baylor team in 2010 for multiple marijuana issues and sat out the entire 2011 collegiate season before entering the supplemental draft.

He looks good on the field, but that is not his issue—staying on the field is his problem.

For the Colts, anything higher than a fourth-round pick would have been a major risk for the franchise. Indianapolis is in full rebuilding mode and does not need characters like Gordon to potentially cause issues in the locker room no matter how good he has a chance to be on the field.

Gordon may be great for the Browns, or he could be a complete waste of a draft pick. The main point to take away here is that the Colts are serious about upgrading the roster, particularly the wide receiver position, and may be willing to take a gamble to do so.
