Indianapolis Colts Reportedly Sign S LaRon Landry

The Indianapolis Colts [1] have been one of the most active teams during the two-day start to the 2013 NFL [2] free-agency period and worked late into the night on Wednesday to get yet another deal done for a defensive contributor.

The latest signing affects the secondary, as former Washington Redskin and New York Jet safety LaRon Landry [3] has reportedly agreed to sign a four-year contract with the Colts.

Jason La Canfora [4] of CBS Sports first reported the signing on Twitter:

According to La Canfora [5], the deal is worth $24 million total and will net Landry $14 million in guaranteed money:

While it seems like Landry has been around forever, he’s just 28 years old and started 15 games for the Jets [6] last season in his first professional year away from Washington.

Once a star at LSU, Landry came to fame with the Redskins [7], where his hard-hitting ability and all-around play resulted in him starting every game he ever played for the Skins. He accumulated 290 solo tackles and four interceptions in his five seasons in the nation’s capital.

The Redskins chose to let him walk in 2012, but the Jets had no problem taking a chance on the star safety, especially after photos like this one starting popping up on Landry’s Twitter account:

He made good on his short-term contract with the Jets, grabbing two interceptions last season and consistently outperforming a slew of guys with better contracts and more heralded accomplishments under Rex Ryan [8].

Fans noticed, as Landry made the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career, and other teams around the league did too, as Landry was one of the better free-agent safeties in this year’s class.

With Landry coming aboard, the Colts continue to revamp a roster that went 11-5 last season and lost out to eventual Super Bowl champ Baltimore [9] in the Wild Card Round of the NFL playoffs.

Landry will join cornerback Greg Toler and linebackers Lawrence Sidbury and Erik Walden on a brand new Indianapolis defense, one that does not include Dwight Freeney for the first time since the 2001 season.

Offensive linemen Donald Thomas and Gosder Cherilus are also coming to Indy, marking a successful open to the free-agency period for a team that is now building for the future on defense while looking to capitalize on Andrew Luck’s rookie-season success.

Landry should slide in as a starting safety on the Colts defense, and he presents a significant upgrade at the position to anything Indianapolis would have received in the NFL draft. Ryan Grigson continues to deliver new pieces to this growing franchise.
