Indianapolis Colts: Remaining NFL Draft Must Provide Andrew Luck with Security

But there is no nucleus in place for Luck in Indianapolis.
Luckily for Luck and the Colts , they have several more picks to make and lives to change. In the process they should make Luck’s rookie season a little easier.
The Colts have several needs on both offense and defense, but they took a quarterback first overall in the draft. Now they must supply him with the tools and weapons to make him a successful player and the Colts a successful team.
Tight end Coby Fleener could be an option for Indy with the 33rd pick. He is the best tight end in the draft and was a college teammate of Luck at Stanford. The chemistry is already in place, and the comfort level between the two could make their transitions to the NFL that much smoother.
Receiver Stephen Hill out of Georgia Tech could be a great option in the second round. He would be a great compliment to Indy’s best offensive threat, Reggie Wayne. Alshon Jeffery, Brian Quick, Nick Toon and Marvin McNutt could also be receiving options in the later rounds of the draft. The Colts have a need for more receivers—Wayne alone cannot cut it, and Austin Collie is injury prone.
The Colts could benefit from adding Luck’s former teammate in Fleener or adding a receiver on Friday. They could also wait to add a couple of receivers later in the draft. There is simply a lack of pass-catching options on Indianapolis’ roster, and Luck needs every opportunity to succeed. They are going to have to address the position at some point in the draft. The sooner, the better.
The Colts must also add talent to the offensive line to protect Luck.
Offensive lineman Jonathan Martin, another college teammate of Luck, is still available for the second round. So are Mike Adams, Jeff Allen and Brandon Mosley. The offensive line could not only protect Luck, but it should benefit the ground game.
Though the Colts need help at defense, they drafted Andrew Luck to mold their franchise around. If a team is going to build around a guy, they need to give him the opportunity to be the best he can be. The shortage of pass catching weapons must be addressed early and often in the draft. The offensive line could certainly use a boost, too.
So no matter what direction the Colts go moving forward, it will only benefit Luck at quarterback. He needs more in order to do more in his career.
At some point, the Colts must realize how lucky they are to have Luck. Now they need to equip him for what hopes to be a long tenure in Indianapolis.
