Indianapolis Colts: Can Chad Ochocinco Help Andrew Luck?
Posted By Greg Maiola On May 4, 2012 @ 1:42 pm In Colts News | No Comments
The Indianapolis Colts lost a whole lot of talent in their aerial attack this offseason. Pierre Garcon, Dallas Clark, Jacob Tamme and Blair White are all out of the equation heading into 2012.
The destruction of the Colts is done and over with. The only thing left to do is to stock the team with enough talent to make them a competitive squad.
Wide receiver T.Y. Hilton was taken with the 92nd overall pick in the 2012 draft. He is slightly undersized but is quick and a threat on special teams. He will be thrown into an empty receiving corps, led by Wayne and Austin Collie.
Meanwhile, Andrew Luck was lucky enough to be reunited with Stanford teammate Coby Fleener. He is a good pass-catching tight end and already has chemistry with Luck. Dwayne Allen was another pass-catching tight end drafted by Indianapolis in this year’s draft.
Perhaps the Colts will try to replicate the New England Patriots ‘ passing offense with two tight ends. The only problem with that is that New England also has a deep receiving corps. Their offense has so many elements that it can be very unpredictable. The Colts have a lack of talent at wide receiver, so a two tight-end offense would be easier to defend.
With the draft over, the Colts need to go out and get some receivers in free agency.
Although the Colts are trying to get younger, there is nothing wrong with providing a rookie quarterback with experienced players who can also provide leadership. With the Patriots adding receiver Jabar Gaffney, Chad Ochocinco may now be expendable. His stock is as low as it has ever been, but he has a lot to offer to Indianapolis.
Ochocinco has had over 1,000 yards receiving in seven seasons of his 11-year career. In 2011, he simply got lost with a New England team with a deep playbook and lots of talented receivers.
Ochocinco lost himself with the Patriots. He was not the player or person he had been in the past. His production dropped significantly after he tried changing who he was as a player and a person.
This is why Indianapolis should go after him now.
The Colts could use a veteran like Ochocinco, and he could use a team like Indianapolis. Ochocinco has never been in any legal trouble. He simply wants attention. Most importantly, he has proven to have had a consistent career when he could be himself.
Luck would suddenly have a target with decent size and a guy who wants the ball and wants to score. Ochocinco would give the defense something else to worry about. He could give other receivers opportunities to make plays and could try to revive his career.
At this point, Ochocinco could be acquired at a very low price. He could go for a low draft pick as he has no role in New England’s offense. He could not only bring experience, excitement and leadership to Indianapolis, but he could make Andrew Luck’s life a lot easier.
