If Bruce Arians Leaves Indianapolis, Who Will the Colts Hire?
Posted By Nate Dunlevy On January 9, 2013 @ 6:05 pm In Colts News | No Comments
It’s the silly season when coaches and front office staff get shuffled around like a game of 52 pickup.
The latest turn of the front office dial took a bite out of the Indianapolis Colts ‘ organization and could result in further staffing losses for the team.
According to a Colts’ press release, Tom Telesco was hired by the Chargers as their general manager. Telesco was a staple of the Indy front office under both Bill Polian and Ryan Grigson. Grigson said of Telesco,
I cannot say enough about Tom Telesco and I speak for everyone in this building. Despite him being here for 14 seasons prior to our new regime, Tom bought in from day one and the professionalism he showed on a daily basis never wavered. We developed a strong bond during this special season and I will forever be grateful for having him at my side since Jan. 11th.
He was instrumental in our success this year and I couldn’t have asked for a better right hand man. He helped lay our foundation of a new era and was a living example in every area of his duties of the mantra Coach Pagano preached from day one in terms of “Trust, Loyalty & Respect.” I don’t know a finer football man/person than Tom Telesco. He is very deserving of this privilege and the San Diego Chargers are in great hands. On behalf of the entire Colts organization we wish Tom, Larah and his children nothing but the best as they begin this new journey together.
Already rumors have been swirling for weeks about interest in Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians being a target for head coaching jobs, so Telesco filling a vacancy in San Diego leads to obvious dot connecting.
No one has offered Arians any jobs yet, and other candidates like Alan Williams of Minnesota could get a lot of attention from Telesco. If Arians does depart Indianapolis for San Diego, Chicago or anywhere else, Indy will be faced with the task of replacing him.
The Colts should get their pick of the litter when it comes to offensive minds, as they have one of the most attractive openings in the game. Any coach would jump at the chance to work with Andrew Luck and for one of the most stable, respected organizations in the NFL .
One of the most obvious names would be the man who just left San Diego.
While Norv Turner has always been uniquely unpopular in Indianapolis, he’d be a brilliant fit with Luck. Turner runs an outstanding passing offense and is widely recognized as an exemplary offensive mind. He can’t manage games and has the personality of wet cardboard, but if you want someone to draw up plays in the dirt, he’s the best there is.
Turner has several connections with Chuck Pagano. Pagano’s brother John was Turner’s defensive coordinator this past season. Pagano hired Turner’s previous coordinator Greg Manusky to run the Indy defense.
Of course, long-time Indy fans would kill for a return of Tom Moore to the sidelines. Moore helped craft a brilliant system that Peyton Manning still uses to this day. He’s worked with Luck and expressed a desire to get back into coaching.
Former coordinator and current quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen would be another favorite. Christensen survived the purge of 2012 to retain his place with the club, and recently did a fantastic job calling plays against the Ravens in a loss.
There will undoubtedly be a lot of names floated. Everyone from retreads like Chan Gaily to Pagano’s ex-cohort in Baltimore Cam Cameron could be targets, but unless Arians actually gets hired away, it’s all just speculation.
One thing is certain, however, anyone the Colts offer the job to would be a fool not to take it.
Andrew Luck is going to turn some lucky coach into a genius.
