Fewer Landing Spots for Bruce Arians and Other AFC South Must-Reads

Posted By Nate Dunlevy On January 16, 2013 @ 8:37 am In Colts News | No Comments

Bruce Arians may be back with the Indianapolis Colts after all.

Brad Briggs and Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune [1] reported the Chicago Bears have hired Marc Trestman to be their coach, crossing off one of the prime landing spots for the Colts’ offensive coordinator.

While there are still coaching openings in Philadelphia, Jacksonville and Arizona, Arians has not been closely linked to any. None of those jobs feature a stable quarterback situation.

Arians was thought to be a favorite for the San Diego job, but they hired Mike McCoy from Denver.

The news will likely disappoint Arians, who may well win the AP Coach of the Year award for his work filling in for Chuck Pagano during his cancer-related absence.

For the Colts, getting Arians back will mean stability for Andrew Luck and the rest of the young offensive unit.

Arians is well respected, but controversial. Some fans blame his vertical offense for leading to too many quarterback hits. They complain it doesn’t utilize running backs in the passing game and is over-aggressive.

Continuity is important, however, and it’s hard to deny the Indy offense outperformed most reasonable expectations in 2012.

The music hasn’t stopped playing yet, but the Colts will be happy enough if the last chair remaining for Arians is theirs.
