Fantasy Football Week 1 Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em: Should Owners Start Kerry Collins?

The 38-Year Old Kerry Collins [1] is Under Center in Indianapolis

For his career, Colts [2] QB Kerry Collins has only managed to get a rating of over 80 three times in a season.

Although that may seem somewhat decent, Collins has been in the NFL [3] since 1995.

I was eight years old when this man was under center in Carolina, but he has had his fair share of solid moments in pro football.

To begin, he led the Panthers [4] to the NFC Championship game in only his second season, and then took the New York Giants [5] to the Super Bowl in 2000.

Collins was also the man at the helm in Tennessee when the Titans [6] were the AFC’s No. 1 seed in 2008 but were upset in the divisional round at home.

So, he has done well, and better than what most people think when they first here the name “Kerry Collins.”

However, with all this being said, if he happens to be on your fantasy team, Collins should be on the bench.

Sure, the Colts have a diverse array of targets to which he can throw, but he’s only been with Indianapolis since late August, and it takes a lot longer than a few weeks to grasp the Indy offense.

In addition to that, the man is 38-years old, and it’s safe to say that he’s not Brett Favre [7].

But, let’s say he can still prove those cynical of him wrong this season.

Even so, that’s not going to happen against the Houston Texans [8].

Although Houston had one of the worst pass defenses in 2010, all that is going to change in 2011.

First, they went and drafted DE J.J. Watt from the Wisconsin Badgers, who will significantly improve their pass rush.

Secondly, the Texans acquired DBs Danieal Manning from Chicago [9] and Johnathan Joseph from Cincinnati [10], both of whom were great pass defenders with their former franchises and will easily make an immediate impact in their new secondary, plus they’ll complement one another very well.

Now to make matters even more against Collins’ favor, the Colts have a history of dealing with injuries to their offense, and in particular, their receiving corps.

Obviously, it’s not as serious as it has been in the past, but they’re still not 100 percent, and having a new man under center combined with that doesn’t help the case.

Later on in the season, Collins may be a viable start, but not in Week 1 against the Texans on the road down to Houston.
