Fantasy Football 2012: Reggie Wayne Is an Elite Receiver in PPR Leagues
Posted By Chris Peterson On October 8, 2012 @ 6:59 pm In Colts News | No Comments
It was a very interesting week in the world of fantasy football but its star was Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne , who along with rookie quarterback Andrew Luck, engineered an incredible 30-27 upset victory over the Green Bay Packers after trailing 21-3 at halftime.
Following a mediocre season in 2011, Wayne was a bit of an afterthought in fantasy football drafts entering the season, and he was often drafted in rounds 8-10 or later. After all, Wayne only averaged 12.2 fantasy points per game in 2011, which was his lowest average since the 2003 season.
But after just four games with Luck at quarterback, it is safe to say that Wayne is back among the upper-echelon of fantasy wide receivers in point-per-reception scoring formats.
There are two reasons why Wayne will be a standout fantasy contributor for the remainder of the season. One, he is still a very talented receiver and was obviously hindered last season by the poor play of the quarterbacks (Kerry Collins, Curtis Painter, Dan Orlovsky) he was forced to endure and two, he is going to get a ton of targets from a very talented quarterback.
At this point, Wayne is leading the national football league in overall targets (60) and has played in just four games (compared to five for most players). The 33-year old veteran has already caught 36 passes for 506 yards to go along with two touchdowns in just four games. He also leads the league in receiving yards per game with 126.5 and should be considered a top-10 fantasy PPR wide receiver for the remainder of the season.
So if you Lucked out (excuse the pun) and drafted Wayne in your PPR league, you hit the lottery. Getting that kind of value in a fantasy draft is exactly the type of thing that leads to playoff berths and fantasy championships.
Just make sure from this point forward that the revitalized Wayne is in your lineup every week because a deeper look into the numbers shows that he has the tools to be an elite fantasy receiver for the rest of the season.
