Dwight Freeney Has Struggled and Other AFC South Must-Reads

Six tackles. Two sacks.

So says Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star. [1]

$14 million is the other relevant number.

No one has ever accused Kravitz of being a homer or overly kind to the Colts, but his defense of the play of Freeney is surprising considering the limited impact the venerable pass-rusher has had.

On one hand, the Colts are 7-4, so you could argue that whatever they’ve done this season can be defended.

On the other, neither the numbers nor the tape that Kravitz claims exonerate Freeney can be defended.

Does Dwight Freeney [2] have some value to the Colts this season? Obviously, he does. A young locker room has thrived under the veteran leadership the Colts have around.

Was it a mistake for the Colts to pay $14 million to bring Freeney back this year?

While there is still time for him to make a memorable impact play, there’s little doubt that on a roster full of holes, Ryan Grigson could have made better use of his resources.

It never made any sense for Freeney to re-sign with the Colts, and bringing him back has been one of the few inefficient decisions for a front office that has had an outstanding year.

Freeney’s play has mattered on a couple of occasions. He visibly wreaked havoc in games against Miami [3] and Buffalo [4], but two games worth of impact doesn’t merit what the Colts invested in him.
