Comparing Andrew Luck to Robert Griffin III and Other AFC South Must-Reads

The debate rages on.

Whereas Peter King of Sports Illustrated [1] stated this week that Robert Griffin III has outplayed Andrew Luck [2] on the basis of conventional stats, today’s article of the day comes from Chase Stuart of Football Perspective [3], who notes that many advanced metrics favor Luck.

Stuart’s article isolates why Luck’s pedestrian conventional numbers hide what has been a remarkably efficient season from the rookie.

I’ve avoided taking up the Griffin/Luck debate early this year, because Griffin is excellent in many stats that are important. Yards per attempt is perhaps the most important passing stat of all, and RG3 has been wonderful.

However, much of his production came at the expense of a terrible Saints [4] defense, whereas Luck has played a difficult slate of defenses.

Needless to say, neither team regrets their choice, and both players look like stars early on.

Luck’s play has had a subtle kind of brilliance to it. His traditional numbers are suppressed thanks to a low completion percentage, but as is always the case, numbers don’t lie; they just don’t tell the whole story.

That’s why it’s important to find the right numbers. Luck’s success isn’t a case of “winning” over stats. It’s just a case of finding the right stats that more accurately capture the value he is clearly producing on the field.

In this case, there are plenty of numbers that say Luck is already a solid NFL [5] starter, and there are others that suggest an elite player is in the making.
