Colts vs. Titans: Andrew Luck Rallies Indianapolis to Stunning Overtime Win

If the season ended today…

For the Tennessee Titans [1], those words burn as their record dropped to 3-5 as a result of a 19-13 loss at the hands of Andrew Luck [2] and the Indianapolis Colts [3].

With five losses in eight games, their season may already be over.

For Indianapolis, those words mean hope burns brightly.

It sounds insane, but it’s true.

If the season ended today, the Indianapolis Colts would be the sixth seed in the AFC.

They cling to the final wild card slot as a result of a thrilling come-from-behind victory that saw Luck and company score two touchdowns in the final minutes and overtime.

Tennessee led most of the day in a grinding game that saw both offenses move the ball effectively between the 20s but stall when approaching the red zone.

The Titans overcame a litany of foolish penalties and bad calls, and held a slim 13-6 lead late in the fourth quarter.

Matt Hasselbeck [4] was efficient most of the day, and his 23-yard strike to Kendall Wright was the only touchdown of the day for either team in the first 55 minutes.

The Colts put up only a pair of field goals through three quarters, but that belied the fact that the offense moved the ball regularly throughout the game. A missed field goal and an interception in the end zone snuffed out promising drives for the Colts.

With 10:26 to play, the Colts took over at their own 20-yard line and ripped off a 14-play drive that lasted nearly seven minutes and included a fourth-down conversion.

The Titans nearly responded with a game-winning drive late in regulation. They moved the ball to the Indianapolis 41-yard line, but only managed a single yard as Hasselbeck misfired twice, giving the ball back to the Colts.

Luck’s biggest play of the game may go unnoticed, but with 47 seconds left, he hit Donnie Avery for 10 yards on 3rd-and-5 to maintain possession. An incomplete pass would have forced a punt into the wind from inside the Colts’ 15.

After winning the toss, Donald Brown did the heavy lifting, rushing for 43 yards on the drive (80 on 14 carries for the game). Luck then found Reggie Wayne on a critical 3rd-and-8 for 20 yards of his game-high 91 yards, before hitting Vick Ballard on a 16-yard screen pass that saw him dive for the pylon to extinguish any hope of a follow-up drive for the Titans.

Luck finished the day with 297 passing yards to go with a touchdown and a pick. His two touchdown drives covered 14 and nine plays, over 80 yards each.

The win sets up a clash of surprise 4-3 teams in Indianapolis in Week 9. The Dolphins [5], led by fellow first-round pick Ryan Tannehill, will present a stern test for a Colts team desperate to capitalize on a pair of tight victories.

Indianapolis will follow that game with a short week and a road test against Jacksonville [6].

The Titans host the Bears [7] before traveling to Miami before their bye week. Tennessee faces a challenging closing slate including road games with the Colts and Packers [8] and a home game against Houston [9].

Any glimmer of the playoffs would require the Titans to win both games heading into the bye to even their season record at 5-5. Anything less would likely leave them out of the picture come January.
