Colts Sign RB Chris Rainey, How He Fits into Pep Hamilton’s Offense
Posted By Eli Nachmany On November 20, 2013 @ 6:31 pm In Colts News | No Comments
One of the faster running backs in the league, Rainey could be a solid third-down back in Indianapolis.
General manager Ryan Grigson is smart to add another offensive weapon, considering the fact that top pass catcher Reggie Wayne is out for the rest of the year with an ACL injury.
While Rainey likely won’t make a huge impact, he could certainly earn himself a few touches in offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton’s scheme. A rusher as dynamic as Rainey only needs three to six touches to make a difference.
It appears that the Colts are loading up on running backs. After acquiring Trent Richardson in September and Dan Herron in October, the Colts have signed on an eclectic group of ball-carriers with drastically different skill sets.
If anything, the signing of Rainey could be an indictment of Trent Richardson. Richardson has struggled mightily this season on the Colts offense, managing just 2.8 yards per carry since moving to Indianapolis.
Speaking of indictments, Rainey will need to stay out of trouble with the law if he’s to maintain a roster spot with the Colts. The Steelers cut the running back during the offseason due to an incident.
It wouldn’t be terribly surprising to see Rainey line up in the slot at some point during his career with the Colts. He and T.Y. Hilton would be an explosive combination for Indianapolis going forward.
Though he’s not necessarily a world-beater, Rainey will add another dimension to the Colts offense and give quarterback Andrew Luck another tool to play with on his road to becoming one of the best signal-callers in the NFL.
Expect Hamilton to open up the offense even more for Luck now that Rainey is a member of the team. When he’s on the field, the rusher will stretch defenses both vertically and horizontally, which will be very valuable to Hamilton. It shouldn’t take long for Rainey to work his way into the backfield rotation for Indianapolis.
