Chuck Pagano Returns to Work and Other AFC South Must-Reads

Press conferences don’t often have standing ovations unless someone announces “free food!”

Chuck Pagano’s return to the Indianapolis Colts was not your normal press conference.

Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star [1] writes that Pagano’s return was greeted with joy from everyone.

The most poignant story is that the light in Pagano’s office that was left on for his return has finally been turned off.

Pagano’s inspiring triumph and gracious remarks cap what has been one of the most remarkable stories in the 2012 NFL season and have provided hope to thousands battling cancer.

For the Indianapolis Colts, Pagano’s return should provide tangible, real-world results as well. The Colts currently field the worst defense in football [2], and have desperately missed Pagano, the teacher and technician.

As important as Pagano has been as a motivational tool, he’s more important as a coach, leader and game-planner.

After all, Jim Irsay hired him and not Tony Robbins to be the head coach.

The Colts have failed to improve in any area on defense over the course of the year, and the defensive backs especially are terrible without exception.

Pagano’s background as a secondary coach should be invaluable to helping the Colts fix glaring weaknesses in one of the NFL’s worst units.

Honoring Pagano as a survivor has had its place, but now the best way to respect the man is to treat him as if he were any other NFL head coach.

I’m sure Pagano would want to be seen as a coach rather than as a plot line.
