Bruce Arians Should Be Coach of the Year and Other AFC South Must-Reads

Posted By Nate Dunlevy On December 14, 2012 @ 7:09 am In Colts News | No Comments

It’s the easiest vote in football right now.

Today’s Article of the Day comes from Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star [1] who says Bruce Arians is an obvious choice for Coach of the Year.

It is absolutely impossible to argue with this position.

Unless you are going to split hairs (and votes) over a Chuck Pagano/Arians ballot, AP writers have little choice but to put Arians at the top of their ballot.

There’s no point in rehashing all the arguments in favor of Arians, but one thing bears mentioning.

Arians learned on the job this season.

Against the New York Jets [2], his terminal conservatism turned a close game into a blowout.

To his credit, Arians has improved in his game management techniques and embraced higher-percentage but counter-intuitive strategies in recent weeks.

His decision to throw late against both Buffalo [3] and Tennessee typifies a more aggressive edge that has helped the Colts secure late wins.

The willingness to reconsider past decisions and learn from them is a sign of strength of character, and Arians has demonstrated that all season. His integrity in keeping the spotlight on Pagano during the ordeal has been admirable.

Arians (or Arians/Pagano) will win the award in a walk this year, and that’s exactly as it should be.
