Barnwell: Colts Not for Real and Other AFC South Must-Reads
Posted By Nate Dunlevy On December 13, 2012 @ 8:37 am In Colts News | No Comments
Bill Barnwell of Grantland says the Colts are not for real.
For many of the same kinds of reasons that I declared Indianapolis is “not a good team ” this week, Barnwell cobbles together an argument that what the Colts are doing in 2012 is more a function of a weak schedule than it is some inherent quality.
These kinds of statements anger fans, but they shouldn’t.
Having a right opinion of the actual talent level of the Colts allows you to truly marvel at what they’ve accomplished.
If you think the Colts are really a good, high-quality football team, then what they are doing isn’t special at all. There’s no magic in it. It’s only special because “everyone was wrong about them.”
Everyone being wrong about something isn’t special, and it’s only fun in a sadistic kind of way.
If, however, you can embrace how completely ridiculous it is that Indy is 9-4, you can really deeply appreciate the efforts of the men who have made it possible.
The harder you look at the Colts’ record the more insane it is, the more inexplicable it is, the more fun it is.
The fact is that this wasn’t supposed to happen. The Colts aren’t very far off in terms of quality from where most pundits thought they would be. They are just winning a lot more.
The good news for Indianapolis fans is that next year’s team will be much improved talent wise. The whole roster will be turned over again this offseason, as it should.
Even with a better roster, however, the Colts might not have the same success they did this year. They could take a step back in terms of wins, but a step closer to the goal of returning to the Super Bowl.
It’s a wonderful season in Indianapolis. It’s something to be celebrated and embraced.
Cassius Vaughn and Darius Butler, two of the worst corners in football, have been named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for the Colts this year.
If that’s not amazing, I don’t know what is.
Seeing things how they really are makes them more special, not less.
The Colts aren’t just another good team with a 9-4 record. That happens all the time.
