Andrew Luck: Why the Rookie’s Season Is About to Take a Turn for the Worse

Posted By John Dorn On September 26, 2012 @ 11:32 am In Colts News | No Comments

So far this season, Indianapolis Colts [1] quarterback Andrew Luck [2] has held his own against so-so opponents. All of that is about to change.

Through the first three games of his rookie campaign, Luck has exceeded 300 yards twice. His five touchdowns have him tied for seventh in the NFL [3], and he’s thrown just one interception in his last two games, though the Colts are last in the AFC South at 1-2.

If you take a look at his opposition thus far, you’ll notice that he hasn’t been tested by good NFL competition.

The Jaguars [4], Luck’s Week 3 opponent, have allowed 72 points this season, and their only interception has been of Luck. Minnesota [5], whom Luck faced two weeks ago, has given up 59 points this year, and has only been able to pick off one pass. The Bears [6] defense, which took on Luck’s Colts in Week 1, is better than the previous two teams, but turning the ball over five times isn’t acceptable.

The Colts will enjoy their bye week this Sunday, but their road ahead is much harder than the one behind them.

In Week 5, Luck will battle with Clay Matthews, Charles Woodson and the Packers [7] defense. Green Bay is first in passing yards allowed through three games this season, with only 125.3.

The following week, the Colts travel to East Rutherford to face the Jets [8] defense. New York is also in the top portion of the league in opponents’ passing yards allowed, currently at 218.7, good for 11th best in the league.

Skip ahead to Week 9, and Luck will be taking on the Dolphins [9] at Lucas Oil Stadium. It’s numbers aren’t pretty, but Miami’s defenders are sound, and have three picks in three games this season. The ‘Fins have allowed a combined 57.3 completion percentage to opposing quarterbacks.

Other top defenses Luck will face in the coming weeks include Houston [10] and Detroit [11]. After an early bye week, Luck will need to complete a string of 13 games in 13 weeks, with seven of those in opposing stadiums.

He’ll definitely need some luck to escape his rookie year on top.
