Andrew Luck: Why the Colts’ General Is the Greatest Rookie QB Ever

Posted By Tyler Brooke On December 3, 2012 @ 6:12 pm In Colts News | No Comments

The Indianapolis Colts [1] made an incredible comeback Sunday against the Detroit Lions [2], giving them their eighth win of the season. After being down 12 points, the Colts were able to score twice in the final two minutes and 39 seconds to win 35-33.

Andrew Luck [3] was able to lead the team back after struggling earlier in the game. He threw three interceptions in the game, but was able to make up for it with an impressive 391 yards passing and four touchdowns, including the final two to win the game.

After yet another impressive performance, Andrew Luck has proven himself as one of the best rookie quarterbacks to play.

However, if you begin to consider it, Luck is making a strong case for being the best rookie quarterback ever.

After the win on Sunday, Luck now holds the record for most wins by a rookie quarterback selected No. 1 overall with eight wins. After just a 2-14 record last year, the Colts have quickly turned it around thanks to Luck’s desire to win.

Not only has his team quadrupled its win total from last season with four games remaining, it is also at the top of the wild-card race and looking to make a run in the playoffs.

The win also gave Luck his fifth game-winning drive in the fourth quarter on the year. He is now tied with Vince Young and Ben Roethlisberger [4] for most game-winning drives by a rookie. His ability to drive down the field late in the game reminds many of the Colts’ former quarterback, Peyton Manning [5].

What Luck is able to do that Manning could not is escape the pocket and run down the field. Luck has surprised many with his speed and elusiveness. His ability to notice an open running lane has been a valuable asset, especially in the red zone.

Luck has five touchdowns on the ground, all in the red zone. He realizes when his receivers are covered and is able to tuck it and run.

Luck is also on pace to break the rookie record for passing yards. With four games remaining, he is already at 3,596 yards. Cam Newton broke the record last year with 4,051 yards.

What separates Luck from other rookie quarterbacks throughout NFL [6] history is his desire to win. His leadership is incredible, as he is able to take control of the huddle and encourage his teammates. His competitive nature shows after throwing an interception, as he is shown yelling at himself, but also figuring out why mistakes were made.

With his team completely turning it around from last year, Luck is proving why he will be remembered as the best rookie quarterback ever. If this trend continues, perhaps one of the greatest to play ever.
