Andrew Luck: Quick Improvements Colts’ Rookie QB Needs to Make

Posted By Sophia Pompilus On October 2, 2012 @ 1:28 pm In Colts News | No Comments

Rookie QB Andrew Luck has had to deal with a lot of pressure since he was signed to the Indianapolis Colts.

Not only does he have the difficult task of adjusting to professional football, but he has to do it well and fast. Luck has to live up to high expectations in replacing former Colts QB Peyton Manning. And those are some pretty big shoes to fill.

In these three games, we’ve seen glimpses of what Luck can do with this team, but they have not been enough.

Here are three areas Luck needs to improve on.

Control passes

Out of the three games the Colts have played, Andrew Luck’s completion percentages were the lowest in Weeks 1 and 3. Coincidentally, these are the two games the Colts have lost. In Game 1, he completed 51.1 percent and in game three, just 47.8 percent.

One of the reasons for these low completion percentages is Luck’s throwing. In his first game, Luck threw some unfortunately bad passes. His passes through three games so far have been either underthrown or overthrown.

If Luck wants to score consistently, he needs to create better opportunities for his receivers by throwing passes they can catch. He has to also control his passes better if he wants to avoid turning the ball over.

Limit turnovers

In his first NFL game, Luck and the Colts were throttled by the Bears by a score of 41-21. Luck had one touchdown and threw for 309 yards, completing just over half of his passes. This mediocre stat line sounds about right for a rookie. One glaring aspect of the game though were his turnovers.

Luck threw three interceptions in his debut and had one fumble. He has to learn to have better control of the ball, because all it takes is just one bad pass to change the outcome of a game.

Maintain control under pressure

There are many NFL teams who play tough defense, and they will have no mercy on rookies. Luck will be pressured and rattled by opposing teams, but he must be poised under control to avoid making any mistakes.

Luck displayed his ability to do just that in the team’s sole win in Week 2. In a tie game against the Minnesota Vikings with 31 seconds left, Luck led his team through a game-winning drive.

Said receiver Reggie Wayne [1], “The kid’s got poise,” Wayne said. “He’s got some winning in the blood.”

Andrew Luck is a tough position not only because of the team he is on, but because of who his predecessor is. With four weeks of the NFL already gone, Luck and the Colts have a 1-2 record.

It’s understandable that a rookie QB would face some early struggles, but the NFL is an extremely fast-moving league. If Luck wants to turn this team around and win games, he needs to make several adjustments quickly.
