Andrew Luck Is a Lock for Indianapolis Colts, No. 1 Pick in 2012 Draft

Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck [1] is a lock to be the No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL [2] draft, and Indianapolis Colts [3] general manager Ryan Grigson all but confirmed it on Wednesday.

Speaking to local reporters with just over a week to go before the draft, Grigson confirmed that the Colts [4] have made up their mind as to who to select with the first pick next Thursday.

“We’ve exhausted the process, pretty much made up our mind,” Grigson said, per Mike Chappell [5] of the Indianapolis Star. “We’re going to go from there.”

While Grigson also said he wouldn’t reveal who the pick would be before the draft, ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed on Thursday that Luck will be the Colts’ selection.

“No great surprise, it’s what most expected, but Colts have told Andrew Luck they will take him with the No. 1 overall pick, per NFL source,” Schefter tweeted [6]. He later confirmed on ESPN’s SportsCenter that Luck has likely known about the Colts’ decision for some time.

Luck has been the consensus No. 1 pick for months, even during a blip on the radar in which some thought the Colts were considering Baylor quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.

In the end, the idea of taking a player who many consider the most polished quarterback prospect since Peyton Manning [7] in 1998 was too much for the Colts to pass on. Luck, the son of former NFL quarterback Oliver Luck, will be the bridge that connects the end of the Manning era to the future of the Colts franchise.

Grigson, who took over at general manager after the Colts cleaned house this offseason, did his due diligence with the No. 1 pick.

His team attended both Luck’s and Griffin’s respective pro days, while also inviting Luck for a private workout for team officials. When the Colts couldn’t get the same private meeting with Griffin III, many considered Luck a lock at No. 1 overall.

While it’s no surprise now, expect NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to read off Luck’s name as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft in a week’s time. Any other outcome would be a huge shock.
