Andrew Luck Excelled Under Pressure and Other AFC South Must-Reads

Posted By Nate Dunlevy On January 14, 2013 @ 7:42 am In Colts News | No Comments

Andrew Luck [1] is still a young quarterback, but no one questions his ability to throw under duress.

Today’s article of the day comes from Kyle Rodriguez of Colts Authority [2], who says Andrew Luck was poised under pressure in the playoffs.

Rodriguez looked at Luck’s performance when rushed by the Ravens [3] and liked what he saw.

Luck took 41 sacks on the season (fourth in the NFL [4]), and while that number is uncomfortably high as a raw figure, he ranked just 15th in the NFL among qualified passers as a percentage. The Colts threw so often, that even a normal sack rate produced big sack totals.

Obviously, the Colts need to improve the offensive line in the offseason, but Luck will eventually develop ways to improve his sack rate on his own. Sack rate is much more a function of offensive scheme and quarterback than the line. Sack rate is one of the few numbers a quarterback controls almost entirely because he can decide when to throw.

The Colts don’t need to assemble an elite line around Luck. Even an average unit will produce big results in the passing game. Should Bruce Arians and his vertical offense return to Indy in 2013, giving receivers more time to get downfield will be a must.

One thing is certain, the Colts have found their answer at the most difficult position to fill. If they can just keep Luck off the turf an extra time per game, the can take the next step as a franchise.
