Andrew Luck: Colts Will Be Dangerous in Playoffs with Clutch Rookie at Helm

We all knew Andrew Luck was going to be good, but only the wild dreamers thought he’d be this good.

I’m not even talking about his record setting numbers, I’m referring to the impact he is making in the win-loss column. Luck put both his numbers and his ability to lead his team on vivid display Sunday.

The Colts [1] took down the Kansas City Chiefs [2] 20-13 in a game that clinched a postseason berth for the 10-5 Colts. In that game, Luck became the most prolific rookie passer the league has ever seen.

Luck surpassed Cam Newton’s year-old record by having now thrown for 4,183 yards in his rookie season

Any time you can set a record like this in the NFL [3], it is impressive. Still, Luck setting this record is not overly shocking. Passing numbers continue to climb in the NFL, and Luck also has also set the record for most attempts by a rookie quarterback.

If you give one of the most heralded rookie quarterbacks of all time the most pass attempts, the chances are pretty good that he will break the yardage mark. On the whole, Luck’s numbers are not jaw-dropping.

He has completed just 54.3 percent of his pass attempts with 21 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. This leaves him with a quarterback rating of 75.6. Again, not overly surprising.

What is a shock is that Luck has his Colts team in the playoffs. The same Colts that went just 2-14 last season.

This current Colts team still carries plenty of the flaws that plagued them last season. For instance, their defense is 20th in passing yards allowed and 24th in rushing yards allowed. These are not numbers that indicate postseason success.

However, like its quarterback, this team cannot be judged on stats alone. They are proving to have a knack for making the big plays at the biggest times. This Sunday was a classic example.

Luck threw for just 205 yards against the Chiefs by completing just 17-of-35 passes. Yet there he was with less than five minutes left hitting Reggie Wayne for what turned out to be the game’s winning score.

That was Luck’s seventh game-winning drive of the season. Now that’s a stat that really jumps out.

This Colts team is full of heart. There is no quit in them, and a big part of that is due to the competence of Luck late in games. He is making the big plays when his team needs them, and that will continue right into the playoffs.
