Andrew Luck: Colts QB Has Made Himself Must-Start Player for Fantasy Owners

I don’t know if it’s actually better to be lucky than good, but I do know that Andrew Luck [1] is very, very good.

It’s time you pencilled him in as a QB1 and started him each week, fantasy owners.

The rookie quarterback was fantastic on Sunday, leading the Indianapolis Colts [2] to a 30-27 win over the Green Bay Packers [3]. He finished 31-of-55 for 362 yards with two touchdowns (and a rushing score) and an interception.

In standard scoring leagues, that put him at a shiny 28 fantasy points for the day.

Now, chances are if you drafted Luck you did so to keep him as a backup option. But unless you have a truly elite option, you need to seriously consider starting the Colts’ rookie sensation each week.

After mustering just eight fantasy points in his first career start against the Chicago Bears [4], Luck has been good for 18, 23 and 28 points in the weeks following. And before you go railing against the fact that he did so against the Minnesota Vikings [5], Jacksonville Jaguars [6] and Green Bay Packers, take a look at his upcoming schedule.

He’ll face the New York Jets [7] (without Darrelle Revis), Cleveland Browns [8], Tennessee Titans [9], Miami Dolphins [10] and Jaguars over the next five weeks. Those are pretty solid matchups for the young quarterback.

More important than the number of fantasy points Luck managed against the Green Bay Packers, however, is the fact that he led his team down the field late in the fourth quarter with the game on the line.

He didn’t look like a rookie; he looked like a poised, experienced veteran who was old hat at winning games.

So here is my recommendation to you: Don’t evaluate him like a rookie. He’s going to make some poor decisions and you are going to have to deal with some turnover issues from time to time, but Luck is much more dynamic than your average rookie quarterback (Robert Griffin III withstanding).

Plus, the Colts’ coaching staff is clearly comfortable allowing him to throw the ball around. The Colts may not be a great football team, but they should do some damage through the air this year.

No longer should you be stashing Luck to use for a bye week for your regular quarterback. He now needs to be a consideration as your QB1 each and every week.

Turns out, it’s best to have some Luck and be good.
