2012 NFL Free Agents: Cornerbacks Still Available for the Indianapolis Colts

Jerraud Powers.

That’s it.

The rest of the cornerbacks on the Colts [1] roster have shown nothing that would make you think they were anything more than special teams contributors.

Kevin Thomas. Chris Rucker. Terrence Johnson. Opposing quarterbacks on the Colts’ 2012 schedule are salivating.

Despite the obvious need, the Colts did not address the cornerback position in the draft. However, they did pick up some undrafted free-agent cornerbacks who have a legit shot at making the team due to how thin the Colts are at corner.

Fret not, Colts fans. There are some free-agent corners still available who would provide depth and experience to the Colts’ defensive backfield. They’re not world-beaters by any stretch of the imagination. If they were, they wouldn’t still be available.

Bryant McFadden [2]

I’ve mentioned his name before [3], and I still believe he’d be a solid contributor for the Colts. He’s a veteran of two Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers [4]. He’d bring leadership to a group that desperately needs it.

Kelly Jennings

The Cincinnati Bengals [5] free agent was the top tackling corner in the NFL [6] last year according to Pro Football Focus [7]. He occasionally struggled in coverage, but improved as the season went on. He’d be a welcome addition.

Alan Ball

Ball was just behind Jennings, as Pro Football Focus [7] ranked him second in the league last year. Ball started at safety for the Cowboys [8] in 2010, but was moved to cornerback last year. He would provide good depth to both positions for the Colts.

Donald Strickland

The Colts’ former third-round pick has been a nickel corner for the Jets [9] two of the last three years. He could step right in to the nickel corner spot for the Colts. Strickland is a solid third or fourth cornerback in the NFL.

Drew Coleman

The Jaguars [10] released Coleman a couple of weeks ago. After Coleman’s release, Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com said [11], “The Colts should look at Coleman.” Like Strickland, Coleman is a solid nickel corner, but I could see him landing a starting spot for the Colts if he were signed.

Chris Johnson

Johnson was a starting cornerback for the Raiders [12] the last three seasons. He has visited the Jets [13], but remains unsigned. Johnson, like Coleman, would have a very good shot at landing a starting job with the Colts.

Like I said from the start, none of these guys are “stars,” but they’re all good, experienced corners who can provide immediate leadership and depth to the secondary. The Colts would benefit from signing one or two of these guys.
